“Dad,” Kaci said, striding to him as he stood from the table.

Parker shadowed her, and she knew as well as anyone the picture they made together. In fact, she saw the perfection of that picture flash through her father’s eyes.

“Kaci, wow. Look at you.” He held her at arm’s length before bending in for a kiss and hug. “My goodness. I can hardly believe my eyes.” Stepping back, he took one more look at her and then shifted his gaze behind her. “I don’t believe we’ve met.”

“Dad,” she said, turning, “this is Parker Nelson. Parker, this is my father, Robert MacLaren.”

“Sir,” Parker said, shaking her father’s hand, and in every thought she’d ever had about what this moment would mean when it showed up in her life, this was exactly the way she’d pictured it. So now that it was here, why did it bring such profound unhappiness?

“Nice to meet you, Parker.” Her father retrieved his hand and put it out to the table. “Please, join me.”

“We’d love to.” Parker helped her into a chair before sitting down and smoothing his tie.

“So,” her father said, imminently interested, “how’s everything? How’s school? Classes going okay?”

“They’re good,” Kaci said, glancing at Parker. She wished she could say all the things that she’d been thinking for the past month—how hard it was, how not-right it all felt, but she couldn’t do that and kill the hope on both their faces.

“Kaci and I are in War & Peace together,” Parker said helpfully. “We’re just finishing up a paper on historical genocides.”

“Wow. Tough topic,” her father said.

“Not for Kaci. Your daughter’s a real trooper.” Parker’s gaze came over and settled on her. “And beautiful to boot.” He leaned toward her and kissed the edge of her hair.

When he backed away, she smiled, her gaze on the table as she smoothed out her hair. “You give me too much credit.”

“Or not enough.”
